Things to do on Lake Como by boat

On Lake Como many of the best sights face the water: Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, Villa d'Este, George Clooney's villa, the Nesso waterfall and Isola Comacina are best seen, and sometimes only reachable, by boat. Here are the ones our captains recommend, with the tour that reaches each.

Villa del Balbianello with a boat on the lake
01

1. The villas from the films

Villa del Balbianello (Star Wars, Casino Royale) and Villa Oleandra, George Clooney's villa in Laglio.

02

2. Bellagio and Varenna

The two most famous villages, facing each other in the centre of the lake: see them from the water, then walk around.

03

3. Isola Comacina

The only island of the lake, with medieval ruins and a historic restaurant.

04

4. The Nesso waterfall

A gorge and a waterfall falling into the lake under a Roman-style bridge, visible only from the water.

05

5. Sunset and dinner on the water

A sunset tour with prosecco, or a boat that takes you to dinner at a lakeside restaurant.

06

6. A swim in summer

In July and August the captain stops where swimming is safe and allowed.

Good questions.

What is the best tour for a first visit?

Grand Lake Como, 6 hours: it covers the villas, Bellagio and Varenna.

Are boat tours possible in winter?

Yes, on clear days; the lake is quiet and the light beautiful. Bring warm clothes.
